Ashley’s work in Africa began in 2006 when she volunteered for the Clinton HIV/AIDS Foundation in Rwanda. Deeply touched by what she encountered there, Ashley set out to utilize the skills she acquired in law school and the finance industry to build a sustainable company that would provide employment and business training to local artisans. Today, Ashley Pittman employs over 75 artisans in Kenya, providing them with fair wages, expansion opportunities, and business development training.
Ashley Pittman reinterprets the power and simplicity expressed in the shapes and textures of centuries-old African jewelry. Each piece is entirely handcrafted in Kenya featuring repurposed horn, semiprecious gemstones, bronze and materials indigenous to East Africa.
The horn is sourced from Kenyan Ankole cows that are a food source for the local community and villages. The animals are not harmed in order to obtain their horn, and livestock farming is a sustainable, pasture-based system. Due to the nature of the horn, which varies from dark, black-brown to marbled tan and white, each pieces is one of a kind and unique.
Ashley Pittman donates 10% of all profits to help fund the Kamboo Dispensary and Kathiani Primary School in an area of Kenya particularly hard-hit by prolonged drought. Through the Ashley Pittman Foundation, the school has been provided with a source for clean, de-salinated drinking water, student uniforms, school supplies, hot lunches for the students, and teacher salaries. The dispensary serves a population of over 4,000 people who previously had no access to basic healthcare. These projects are built using volunteer labor from surrounding villages. It is the hope of Ashley Pittman to expand the area and scope that The Foundation is able to serve, affecting measurable change.Donate

The horn we use comes from Kenyan Ankole cows, which are used as a food source by the local community and villages. The horn is a byproduct of the ag- ricultural system and is sold to artisans and others in the community who use it to create jewelry and various items. The animals are not harmed in order to obtain their horn, not even secondarily - it is a discarded item, albeit one of value to some. The horn is considered a sustainable product in the sense that livestock farming in a pasture-based system is a sustainable practice.
Horn is a delicate material and will crack or break if dropped or mishandled. To help maintain the color, smooth surface and luster of horn pieces, condi- tion them periodically with a small amount of plant-based oil. Avoid extreme temperature changes and contact with household chemicals.
All bangles and cuffs are sized to a “medium” wrist size. The diameter of the opening is approximately 2.5”. When trying on cuffs, slide them on at the smallest point of your wrist, below the wrist bone.
The Ashley Pittman Foundation was created to help support healthcare and education initiatives in an area of rural Kenya that has been hard-hit by drought. Through the work of the Foundation, we are able to support the Kathiani Primary School and the Kamboo Dispensary. We provide the school with hot lunches, de-salianated drinking water, uniforms, supplies and funds to employ additional teachers. The dispensary provides much needed medical supplies and aid to the community.

The bronze in our pieces will naturally develop a patina over time. To better preserve your Ashley Pittman jewelry, we recommend keeping the jewelry away from oils, lotions and fragrances. Store your jewelry in an airtight container and use a jewelry polishing cloth periodically to help maintain a shiny bronze finish.
